Quansight Labs is committed to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts across the scientific Python ecosystem. A healthy open-source ecosystem requires more than just technical talent. Contributions in various areas like community engagement, design, documentation, project management, and more are needed. We are looking for a Contributor Experience Lead, who will work across projects to identify, document, and implement practices to foster inclusive open-source communities.

Who we are

Quansight Labs has its roots in the Python data science community. Our founders have had significant involvement in the creation and maintenance of NumPy, SciPy, Jupyter, Spyder, Dask, Conda, Numba, and other projects as well as PyData, NumFOCUS, and Anaconda. Our not-for-profit mission at Quansight Labs is to provide a core development team for the PyData ecosystem and sustain community-driven open-source software. We do this with support from our sibling services organization, Quansight, by applying for grants and working with companies who pay for our innovative Community Work Orders. Labs members primarily work directly on open-source projects but may spend up to 50% of their time working on open-source-related consulting projects.

What's important to us

We are building a company of people who care deeply about open-source projects and communities and their long-term sustainability. Our team is geographically distributed, and working in the open is the norm. We believe in a culture of do-ers, learners, and collaborators. We are looking for people who are motivated, humble, curious, and respectful of others.

What you'll do

The scope of this position is a mix of technical and community work, focusing on actions that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) across the NumPy, SciPy, Matplotlib, and Pandas communities. In this position you will:

  • Improve the experience of contributors and maintainers of two open-source projects, according to interest;
  • interact with the community to improve and strengthen existing DEI, onboarding, and documentation efforts and practices across within the involved projects;
  • improve cross-project integration and collaboration.

We expect up to 25% of the Contributor Experience Lead time will be spent on maintenance and small features development on two projects. Other responsibilities will include:

  • Help onboard new contributors
  • Organize and host regular community meetings, sprints, and mentoring activities (possibly including multiple projects), and maintaining a public calendar of events.
  • Coordinating documentation and possibly internationalization efforts for these projects.

This position can be full-time or part-time (≥ 20 hrs/wk), and for those who prefer fixed-time independent contracting over employment, that is possible as well through Quansight or NumFOCUS.

What This Role Will Help Build / In this position, you'll get to:

The scope of work includes activities that will improve the community dynamics of our projects. Furthermore, establishing cross-project roles will introduce a new collaboration model to the Scientific Python communities, allowing community-building work within the ecosystem to be done more efficiently and with greater outcomes. You will be one of the inaugural holders of this role and your work will be a template for similar roles across other projects in the ecosystem and in the future.

We expect to develop a clearer picture of what works and what doesn't in our projects for engagement and retention of new contributors, especially from historically underrepresented groups. We also plan on producing detailed reports on the actions executed and if they have impacted our projects in terms of representation and interaction with our communities. These reports are meant to both internally guide the actions of each project and externally serve as benchmarks to maintainers in other projects and communities that can benefit from our work.

Position Requests and Requirements

Ideally, you will have:

  • Good written and oral communication skills in English
  • Organizational skills
  • Comfort with Python
  • Practical experience with the Python data-science stack - NumPy, SciPy, Matplotlib, Pandas, etc
  • Mentoring or team lead experience
  • Passion for creating inclusive and safe communities

Additionally, the following skills will help you stand out:

  • Familiarity with DEI issues and challenges in open source
  • Personal contributions to an open-source project
  • Community contributions, such as participating in a local meetup, PyLadies or other user groups

Please keep in mind that we are describing the background we imagine would best fit the role. Even if you don’t meet all of the requirements and are confident that you are up for the task, we absolutely want to get to know you!

Why you should join?

In this position, you will work on key open-source projects/communities, with huge potential for lasting impact, improving the representation and helping shape an inclusive culture in these communities. Having technical responsibilities will help you to further expand your technical knowledge and experience, with dedicated mentorship from senior maintainers in these projects.
